How Has The Internet Grown? Story Of A Webmaster

August 26th, 2008 by JCM

I started using the Internet back in 1995. Back then most of what you saw on-line was text and images. GIF’s were very popular even for professional web sites. You also saw many “click here” links. Audio and video were possible but not popular at all since most if not all people had dial-up Internet connections.

The summer of that year I took a class on web designing. I was taught to hand code everything. I was so excited that I started building small sites on geocities web space and would get quite a few visits to them.I remember when even Yahoo! and Google were small.

Easy CGI Web Hosting

A lot of people specially most of the new on-line generation have no idea of how the net works or even what it takes to build a site. My generation didn’t have MySpace or other services like it. We built our own sites from scratch and looked up code for cool effects. Chat rooms and guest-books were very popular as well.

Since then, the Internet has grown to be a gigantic virtual but very real world. Its like a world within our world. We now have Internet access faster that I could imagine possible or necessary, We have movies, video clips, music, e-books, and so much more. Something I like about the web as much as the web itself is open source software. Please check out my article on Associated Content about  open source software and open standards

I think the Internet is a great tool to communicate, buy, sell, have fun, share, create, build community, learn and explore. In essence the Internet is not private or centralized and I believe it should remain that way.

Since my first web designing class the summer school of 1995, I decided that this is what I wanted to do for a living. I kept exploring it on my own and eventually I took professional classes. In reality the classes just taught me about standards because everything else I picked up on my own. I also took other classes that taught me about computer systems and networks, operating systems and software. I also started focusing on graphic design and I enjoy every minute doing it.

I am currently studying computer science and I run my own business on-line. I guess its true what I was told as a kid; “Work in what you like and it will never seem like you are working”. I build websites, do graphic design, print products, and offer PC services. And just to think that it all started with the curiosity of taking a summer class that sounded interesting.

Firefox Addons

August 19th, 2008 by JCM

If you are familiar with Mozilla FireFox, you may already know what the add-ons can do. If you don’t, you are missing out. Add-ons are extensions you can add to make FireFox more useful. For example if you like to download videos from YouTube or similar sites, you can add the DownloadHelper to the FireFox toolbar.

There are too many add-ons to list but I will mention some of my favorite ones. FoxyTunes is an add-on that creates controls for your music player. Since I listen to music while Im on the web, now I dont have to bring up my music player to the front to change, pause, or stop, the songs, I use it with Winamp, but it supports many more players like iTunes, Windows Media Player, Real Player and many more. Another one of my favorite add-ons is Cooliris. With Cooliris you can place your mouse over a link and preview the page without navigating away from the current page.

Brain Games - Lumosity

An add-on that I must mention as well is Piclens. Piclens is a must have if you like to look at images on sites like Google Images, Flikr, MySpace and other sites with image content. Piclens places a “play button” on images of supported sites when you place your mouse over them. When you click on the button it brings up an incredible image gallery. I won’t talk more about that one, you must get it. You can thank me later. The last one I will mention here that is one of my favorite is Inline Definitions. This one is so useful, its an instant reference/dictionary. All you have to do is highlight a word you want to look up, right click and select Inline Definitions from the right click menu.

Now, the part you been waiting for, HOW TO INSTALL ADDONS. This is actually very simple. On the FireFox main menu just click on Tools>>Add-ons. Another window will pop up. Click on Get Add-ons and then, Browse all Add-ons.  You can use the search box or browse by category. Now just surf around, once you find something you like, click on the corresponding Add to Firefox button. When you are done adding just restart FireFox and you will be able to use them.

Thanks for reading my blog. please recommend it to others and if there is something you’d like to know send me an e-mail with your questions related to the web to jcm@jcm-design.com

I will include screenshots of what I write when time allows it or by request. Happy surfing,

-JCM
